Carving out a niche simply means spotting a useful area that no one else has spotted. It might be a simple as being great at spreadsheets, setting-up a printer, reporting, or scheduling the next delivery of your supplies. It might also be being brilliant with company software or budgets or understanding the system of your company. Make sure you don't make yourself indispensable, or this rule backfires.
In the field of Supply Management, this is a very relevant rule because we want to be competitive with our colleagues as well as competitors. Carving a niche for yourself takes out the normal range of office activities because you have to get to move around, being out of the office without explaining to anyone what you are doing. But believe me, this will make you stand out from the herd and give you independence and superior quality. Carving a niche for yourself would lead you to more attention by people other than your boss and even other people's bosses. However, you have to remember that bosses get together and they talk. If they bring your name up, it will be in a good way! This makes it for your boss not to promote you if she wants to win her peer group approval. If the other bosses think you are an asset in the company, your boss has to go along with it! Remember this passage: "If the other bosses think you are a good idea, then your boss really has to go along with it." This post is inspired from the book "Rules of Work" by Richard Templar.

Rules of Work #3 : Volunteer Carefully
Supply Chain professional or not, you are welcome to read this blog category. All of us want to have a successful career whether in the procurement, logistics, supply chain or any industry. But only few know how to get on top at the least possible time. I've been reading a book entitled "Rules of Work" and I'd like to share some key-points in what I've learned. RULE #3 VOLUNTEER CAREFULLY A lot of people think that if they say “YES” to every task people will praise them, get them noticed or even promoted. Of course everyone likes attention. However, as a supply chain leader you should be careful in choosing your moments. Remember to only take a step forward when you are confident that you will LOOK GOOD, GAIN BENEFIT, or MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO SOMEONE WHO NEEDS HELP. Rule #3 is closely related to Rule #1: Get Your Work Noticed. Rule #1 wants you to stand out from the crowd and Rule #3 wants you to THINK VERY CAREFULLY before doing anything. Before doing anything, you have to ask your self the following questions: · Why is this person asking for volunteers? · How will this affect my future plans? · How will I look if I don’t volunteer? · Is this a dirty job that nobody wants? · Is this person overly burdened and needs my help? After finding out the answers to the questions, it is time for you to decide whether you will volunteer to do the job or not. Constant learning and improvement are the keys for an individual to achieve a promotion. Remember that the number of years in service is only a small factor that can grant you a promotion, it is the skills, hunger for learning, and brilliance that can help you get noticed and raise your career ladder. Are you the type of person who works each day with just a single thought? And that is getting through to going home time. If you want to be at the top, then you shouldn’t stand still.
Don’t wait for the time to magically arrive. Instead of waiting for your shift to end, do something and make every moment worthwhile. But remember, the job isn’t the end game for you, it is the promotion, more money, success, amassing the contacts and experience is the end game for you! If you want to be on top you have to do your job extremely well. Keep your eyes on the next step, and every activity you indulge in at work should be merely a step to your plan to move up the career ladder. While your officemates are thinking of their next coffee break without having to do any work, you should be busy planning and executing your next maneuver maneuver to be on top. A real rules player will have gotten their work done by lunchtime so that they have the remaining time in the afternoon to plan their next promotion. You can accomplish your tasks earlier if you just know how to manage your time. Time Management is very essential especially in the corporate world. If you are not good in time management, then it’s time for you to find some courses or articles that can help you how to handle your time. Rules of Work #2 revolves in the following things: · Keep your eyes at the game: promotion, money, success, amassing the contacts and experience to set out on your own. · Keep your eye on the next step. Every activity you indulge in at work should be merely a step in your plan to MOVE UP. · Rules Players will have gotten their work done by lunchtime, so that they have their afternoon F-R-E-E to plan for their next promotion Supply Chain professional or not, you are welcome to read this blog category.

I've been reading a book entitled "Rules of Work" and I'd like to share some key-points in what I've learned. RULE #1 GET YOUR WORK NOTICED You probably have tons of co-workers in your company that also wants to get noticed. The best way to catch the attention of your boss is to give him/her an unsolicited report. By doing this, you will surely stand out from the crowd. Give your boss a report or a product review, report on your suppliers, and so on without him/her asking for it (just make sure you don't appear as a "show off" when you do this). If you are poor in product reviews or in writing, it's time for you to sharpen your skills. Constant learning and improvement are the keys for an individual to achieve a promotion.
