Rules of Work #3 : Volunteer Carefully
Supply Chain professional or not, you are welcome to read this blog category. All of us want to have a successful career whether in the procurement, logistics, supply chain or any industry. But only few know how to get on top at the least possible time. I've been reading a book entitled "Rules of Work" and I'd like to share some key-points in what I've learned. RULE #3 VOLUNTEER CAREFULLY A lot of people think that if they say “YES” to every task people will praise them, get them noticed or even promoted. Of course everyone likes attention. However, as a supply chain leader you should be careful in choosing your moments. Remember to only take a step forward when you are confident that you will LOOK GOOD, GAIN BENEFIT, or MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO SOMEONE WHO NEEDS HELP. Rule #3 is closely related to Rule #1: Get Your Work Noticed. Rule #1 wants you to stand out from the crowd and Rule #3 wants you to THINK VERY CAREFULLY before doing anything. Before doing anything, you have to ask your self the following questions: · Why is this person asking for volunteers? · How will this affect my future plans? · How will I look if I don’t volunteer? · Is this a dirty job that nobody wants? · Is this person overly burdened and needs my help? After finding out the answers to the questions, it is time for you to decide whether you will volunteer to do the job or not. Constant learning and improvement are the keys for an individual to achieve a promotion. Remember that the number of years in service is only a small factor that can grant you a promotion, it is the skills, hunger for learning, and brilliance that can help you get noticed and raise your career ladder.
